Release Date: Unknown.

The "Evidence":

* "But, more importantly, she said New Line has agreed to release an extended cut of the film, even longer than the 155 minute cut, to DVD. Again, this was info straight from Producer Sarah Green."

* "Green: Terry cut it immediately for DVD and was pleased with the extended version."

* "The Digital Bits: Also today, we've gotten word that producer Sarah Green has recently informed audiences at special limited screenings of Terrence Malick's The New World that the director has created an extended version of the film that will see release on DVD. Malick doesn't make many films, but when he does they're well worth seeing, so this is very cool news indeed."

* "According to J. Hoberman of the 'Village Voice', Malick is indeed working on a three hour cut for release on DVD. Perhaps if it is not on this version, it will be released a few months later a la the 'Black Hawk Down' three disc version or the super-duper 'Sin City' version."

* "Jeffrey Wells: I checked with New Line publicity and it's true: there will be an extra-long version of Terrence Malick's The New World on DVD. That means longer than the 155-minute New York-and-LA version that closed last Tuesday night, and obviously much longer than the 135- or 138-minute version that will re-open on 1.20.06."

* "DP Emmanuel Lubezki: About the ~3 hour dvd version of the film: There will be a much extended sequence of underwater footage in the beginning of the film (he thought possibly 12 minutes). He says this footage is incredible."

* "Berlin Film Festival, February 23rd 2006: It's a half hour press conference from the Berlinale with Q'Orianka Kilcher, Sarah Green and steadicam operator Jörg Widmer. Sarah also offers some insights on the extended DVD, being that it will apparently run some 3 hours, and that this edition unfortunately will not be released until "fall" on HD-DVD. Nothing was mentioned about a regular DVD release of the extended cut, but I'll assume it will be available as well." Thanks to philosopher_no1.

* Answer directly from New Line, March 28th: "At this point in time, we cannot comment on this subject."

* "April 21st 2006: I emailed New Line and they told me they have no plans as of now to release an extended version (like the one shown to Academy members and LA/NYC audiences), nor do they know when it will be released on HD DVD." Thanks to tomlowelion.

The New World - Extended Edition: (May 19th, 2006)

Interesting...

"Looks like the rumors of an extended edition of The New World coming to DVD were true after all. Among the current projects over at audio mixing house Mi Casa Multimedia is the 150-min. extended version of Terence [sic] Malick's "Pocahontas" tale, currently being mastered in 5.1 and 2.0 Surround, as well as a new restoration and remixing of the original A Nightmare on Elm Street in 6.1, 5.1 and 2.0 Surround (no doubt for a new special edition). Both projects are for New Line Home Entertainment and will likely see release later this year or early next."

THE NEW WORLD: (fully) Extended Edition in the works: (June 6th, 2006)

"Suffice it to (daringly) state the following fact:

The extended version currently in the works at Mi Casa is the (near) 3-hour cut of The New World, and not the 150-min. limited theatrical release cut. No further comments can be made on the source of this information, leaving instead the sceptical (I blame you not) as non-sceptical souls to be met with a confirmation on the above in the following month(s)."

Thanks to 'Anon.'

Latest news from Mi Casa Multimedia:

"Legendary director Terrence Malick was in Studio A with Mi Casa engineer Dan Gellert working on the Director's Cut of his latest project The New World."

Small update from "Anon": (July 12th, 2006)

"A 172-min. cut is in the works at Mi Casa Multimedia (DVD sound mixing), referred to at their site as the "extended version"/"Director's Cut." This version is not yet confirmed by New Line, but it being "in production" at Mi Casa should indicate a certainty of it being a future release (probably fall). If indeed a fall release holds true, an announcement may be expected no later than next month (being the next update)."

Some of my fave shots from the trailers, not in the final cut: (...I believe)

I thought the theatrical version was too long as it was. The scenery was beautiful, and the Indians looked great, but the voice overs and lack of dialogue just made the movie incredibly boring. If anything, I'd have rather seen a movie all about the Indians by themselves.

Thanks again to 'Anonymous.' Pass this along to any Malick-obsessed fan you might know...

The official response from New Line Cinema:

"At this time, no announcement has been made regarding an extended cut of "The New World." The DVD set to release next week is the theatrical release. Please continue to check back for the latest updates and products!"

This is code for: "Its box office performance has warned us there's insuffient market to justify multiple DVD versions of this film. The best one might hope for is its future inclusion in a (hypothetical) Malickite boxed-set "Director's Cut" collection (depending upon perceived sell-through prospects, and whether rights might be assembled from various proprietary studios). Now, please buy other stuff."

See the word "perceived" above? Studios like to fill a demand. "Perceived" demand begets product availability.

Discussing DVD lust with your peers might make you feel better; but informing New Line that there is unfulfilled market potential is more likely to get you what you want:

And to quote many a director re: this matter, in this case Mr. Fred Dekker from an AICN interview:

"So, how do we let the studio know we want [in this case; THE NEW WORLD: EE] on DVD? Online petitions? E-mails? Dekker thinks neither of those will work. He said it's too easy to delete emails and an internet petition doesn't mean anything to an exec. His thoughts go back to the good old days. Write a snail mail letter. He said it's harder for them to ignore stacks of letters, something physical. An internet site with a bunch of names on it isn't tangible enough to make an impact. The rights owners have to see that there is money to be made."

I hope this is correct, I really do. Though I have a feeling this whole saga will end with a few hardcore fans raiding the New Line vaults for the missing footage and showing an extended version at guerilla screenings, like something out of Cecil B DeMented (great film by the way).

Of course, if someone is planning such an operation, I'd be more than willing to lend a hand...

For any Government anti-terrorist organisations reading this, I'm not being entirely serious. Honest.

I'd say things are looking quite hopeful at the moment, NutNut, so your raid can be postposed for now... Oh, he left already? Darn.

I've just got back from getting supplies for the raid at my local army surplus store, but it's good news that there seems to be something in the pipeline.

Maybe I'll have to use my newly bought equipment to destroy any prints of this (and perhaps the people responsible for it too) http://www.apple.com/trailers/wb/thewickerman/hd/

The vanishing of the film at the Mi Casa site (a complete wipe of all references to it) raised some concern, so here is their official response:

"I have been asked by New Line to remove the posting as they have not yet set a release date. I have been asked not to release any further info until the picture is in the New Line release schedule and announced by them. Terrence is a very private guy and does not want any publicity."

There you have it. Doesn't make total sense, but that's fine.

The New World R1 'Extended' Cut in October

Warner Home Video have announced the Region 1 DVD release of The New World ('Extended' Cut) on 14th October 2008. This edition of Terrence Malick's epic recreating the turbulent first days of the new America now features over 30 minutes of never-before-seen footage. Also included is a comprehensive, ten-part documentary - Making the New World - which captures the unique creative challenges filmmakers faced.

The running time of this new cut is 172 minutes."
